Avoiding Assumptions
One of the most common sources of risk in yoga classes is assuming a student’s ability level, injury status, or comfort with hands-on adjustments. Students may arrive with injuries, medical conditions, or personal boundaries that are not immediately visible. Many yoga-related injuries occur when students move beyond their capacity or when adjustments are made without clear communication. For this reason, studios should encourage teachers to prioritize observation, ask questions, and obtain clear consent before offering physical assistance. Establishing this standard helps protect both students and instructors while creating a safer and more respectful learning environment.
Proactive Risk Protection
A proactive approach to risk protection helps studios create safer environments for both students and teachers. Clear policies around consent, professional boundaries, and physical adjustments establish consistent expectations across all classes. Encouraging teachers to offer modifications, communicate clearly, and respect individual limits helps reduce the likelihood of injury or discomfort. When studios provide guidance and training on these practices, they support responsible teaching while demonstrating a commitment to student well-being and professional standards..
Patanjali Ethics Framework™
Professional Ethics & Governance for Yoga Studios and Teacher Trainings
The Patanjali Ethics Framework is a practical ethics and governance program designed to support yoga studios and teacher training programs in establishing clear professional standards.
Rooted in the ethical foundations of the Yoga Sutras — the Yamas and Niyamas — this program translates traditional yogic principles into modern policies and teaching practices that help studios create safe, respectful, and professional learning environments.
While yoga has always emphasized ethical conduct, many studios today operate without clear written standards for areas such as teacher boundaries, student consent, injury prevention, or professional conduct. The Yoga Ethics Program provides studios with a simple framework for addressing these responsibilities while remaining aligned with the deeper philosophy of yoga.
Yoga teachers occupy positions of trust. Students often come to practice seeking physical healing, emotional support, or personal growth. For this reason, studios must be mindful of ethical responsibilities that include:
• maintaining appropriate teacher–student boundaries
• obtaining clear consent for physical adjustments
• supporting safe teaching practices
• accurately representing teacher training and credentials
• fostering respectful and inclusive studio environments
Ethical standards help protect both students and teachers, while strengthening trust within the yoga community.
The Yoga Ethics Program provides studios and training programs with a practical set of tools, including:
Professional Code of Ethics
A clear ethical framework grounded in the principles of yoga philosophy.
Studio Governance Policies
Policy templates addressing areas such as teacher conduct, professional boundaries, safety standards, and responsible teaching practices.
Consent and Student Protection Policies
Documents designed to support clear communication around hands-on adjustments, photography permissions, and student privacy.
Teacher Ethics Agreement
A document that teachers sign acknowledging professional standards and studio expectations.
Two-Hour Ethics Training for Yoga Teacher Trainings
A structured ethics module designed for 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training programs, covering professional boundaries, consent, duty of care, and the practical application of yogic ethics.
The purpose of the Yoga Ethics Program is not to regulate the spirit of yoga, but to support studios in translating its ethical foundations into everyday teaching practice.
By connecting the wisdom of traditional yoga philosophy with modern professional standards, the framework helps studios cultivate environments rooted in integrity, safety, and care.
